IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING WORD LIMIT REQUIREMENTS:

Please note that each and every assignment has its own word limit.

Public Health Dentist

Public health dentists, like other dentists, perform primarily clinical work at the entry level: making oral examinations; extracting teeth; doing fillings; diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries of the mouth or teeth; constructing dentures or other dental appliances; maintaining dental charts and histories; taking, developing, and interpreting x-rays and cleaning teeth. In the intermediate level, the public health dentist’s position is increasingly supervisory and administrative and involves such duties as community educational, organizational, and governmental activities. You may also be required to lecture to community and professional groups and to confer with government, school, health, and other social service (Pickett, G. E., Pickett, T. W., & Sacks, T. J. 1995, p 70).

Public Health Administrator

The administrator, also often called the public health officer, administers the public health program of the county or city. Your duties would include inspecting public facilities for health hazards or directing such inspection by others and negotiating with school, state, federal, or other authorities and with community groups in developing health standards and legislation affecting the community. You might be involved in establishing free clinics, cancer detection centers, and other programs to improve public health. You would also develop and coordinate public relations programs to promote programs and services and would participate in radio and television discussions, public meetings, and other local activities. Your job would include responsibility for inspections of hospitals, indigent care centers, and other facilities under the control of the community to ensure that they conform to accepted standards. You might also be involved in developing department policies and procedures, developing budgets, working out desired legislation, and supervising and monitoring public health contracts and grants. (Pickett, G. E., et. al, 1995, p 82).

Public Health Consultant

As experts in public health or some phase of public health, such as nutrition, nursing, and so forth, public health consultants are usually employed at the state and federal levels. They work with local health agencies by making onsite visits and helping to plan, implement, and evaluate healthcare plans. As a public health consultant you might also meet with private organizations to assist in designing healthcare programs and procedures and to help coordinate the work of local agencies in providing needed healthcare services. You might be called on to design training programs for the staff, develop and update procedures manuals, and develop guidelines for evaluating program services. At higher levels you would supervise lower level consultants and would be in charge of larger, more complex healthcare programs. You would coordinate activities with those in the field and in the central office. As such you must have a thorough knowledge of public health programs and policies, good organizational and leadership skills, and must be able to deal effectively with people (Pickett, G. E., et. al, 1995, p 74).

My goal would be pick a career that includes dentistry and administration positions. I have the dental knowledge after practicing for over 25 years but I would like to be in a leadership or administrative role. I would hope that by completing my MPH and doing internships I will be able to reach my goal.
