Benefits and Abuses of Freedom of Expression
Write a 3- to 4-page essay, not including the title or reference pages, considering the benefits and abuses of free speech in an academic setting. Reflect on the Censorship? case study from the readings in Strike and Soltis (2009/2015) and in Schimmel et al. (2015), as well as ethical analyses and legal standards such as the question of “substantial disruption” or support of “legitimate pedagogical interest” to aid your argument.
Include your opinion regarding the role parents and teachers have in developing students’ understanding of the proper use of free speech. Also approach this question from the perspective of censorship—that is, consider if censoring serves as an example of legitimate criticism and evaluation that students can learn from.
If your school setting has a policy regarding censorship and free speech, consider this policy in your analysis. If it does not, analyze what is considered the unofficial policy.
